Meet the Team, Taste our Newest Vintages!

At this yearly event, you'll gather with a small group in our winery amongst the tanks and barrels. You'll have the unique opportunity to taste, and learn about the journey of our unreleased 2023 IAPETUS wines (plus a bonus Shelburne Vineyard Marquette Reserve) in various stages of transformation and aging.

2023 tested the grit of our winegrowing team, starting off with a historic spring freeze event, followed by literal months of rain. In a lot of ways it was devastating, yet the team stayed focused and determined through reduced yields, high disease pressure, and having to work with out of state (NY) and out of country (QC) fruit. Despite all of the challenges, our land and our team demonstrated their resiliency and have produced some remarkable, if not surprising, wines to share with you that they are quite proud of.

Your Cellar Tasting ticket includes a mixer with the winemakers, Q&A (bring your questions!), a tour of the winemaking facility, hors d’oeuvres, and an exclusive taste of a challenging and heart wrenching vintage. Bring your thirst and curiosity, this is a night not to miss!

Iapetus is more than the name of an ancient ocean that once covered the present-day Champlain Valley.  As a concept, it is the beginning of a story hundreds of millions of years old. It is as much about the past as it is about the future.

Just as geology induces transition over time, Iapetus is an evolution for us as winegrowers in how we pursue our working relationship with wine. It is a shifting of time, of scale, and way of thinking. We are not dogmatic in our principles, but rather endeavor to continually experiment, discover, and improve our stewardship of this storied land. Iapetus is a slide in this continuous film, a photograph of a moment now and in the years to come.

Iapetus is wine.

Geocratic Vermont Wine

Our Ethos

We make minimal intervention wine, following the lead of our Vermont Grapes and native yeasts. Iapetus is produced through a close relationship with the environment. Vineyard management takes into account the importance of soil and vine health and the effect these have on wine. Fermentation is then carried out by yeast foraged from the vineyard microbiome and cellar work aims to preserve each season's uniqueness. These practices are meant to raise the wine directly from the place in which it is grown.

WINE AS ENVIRONMENT

WINE AS LANDSCAPE

The life of our wine is inextricable from the place upon which our vines grow. The rocks, the soil, everything that surrounds these plants, creates the qualities you experience in our wine.

Using the deep historical context of the soil in which our grapes grow as a backbone, IAPETUS makes natural, minimal intervention wines. We trust our grapes to lead us to something wonderful.

WINE AS HISTORY

Iapetus is the name of the ancient sea which once covered the bedrock that was thrust into the present-day Champlain Valley. Millions of years of geologic processes slowly created a narrative we see manifested in both landscape and environment. It is precisely this narrative that gives shape to Iapetus wine.

  • No spraying gratuitous chemicals

  • No driving machines on the soil, all grapes are hand harvested

  • Minimal intervention in the growing process

  • We don’t use sulfur or chemicals to “correct” things in the wine making process, including not needing to filter in the wine making process.
